James Madigan est jeune, passionné de football, amoureux de Limerick FC. Il s’est confié longuement à TLMSF pour nous parler de son club, de la League of Ireland, et de la perception du football en Irlande. Beaucoup de fraîcheur chez ce supporter, à consommer sans modération.

Tout d’abord, peux-tu te présenter à nos lecteurs ?
Bonjour, je m’appelle James Madigan, j’ai 15 ans, je viens d’un petit village de l’Ouest de l’Irlande appelé Ennis, 30 km au nord de Limerick. Je suis le football depuis la finale de l’Euro 2008, j’avais alors 8 ans.

Comment t’est venue cette passion pour Limerick FC ?
Le 10 mars 2013, je zappais sur la télécommande de ma TV, quand je tombais sur un match de foot. C’était Limerick FC, qui jouait alors leur premier match en Premier League depuis alors 19 ans, et face à Cork City. Ça se jouait à Thomond Park (stade des rugbymen du Munster, ndhc) devant 3500 supporters. A l’époque, à l’instar de nombreux fans de foot en Irlande, je supportais déjà une des meilleures équipes de Premier League anglaise : Liverpool FC. Mais ce jour-là, après 20 minutes de jeu, j’étais convaincu, je devais suivre Limerick. Je n’ai jamais changé depuis.
Quel est depuis ton meilleur souvenir en tant que fan ? Et ton pire ?
Depuis 3 ans que je supporte Limerick, nous n’avons gagné aucun trophée majeur, mais on a quand même vécu de bons moments. Le meilleur étant de battre Cork City sur leur pelouse l’an passé. Turners Cross (stade de Cork, ndhc) est une véritable forteresse et glaner un nul sur ce terrain est déjà un exploit en soi. J’y étais. Nous n’avions alors pas gagné un seul match de la saison, c’était genre la 21ème journée, nous étions persuadés d’être relégué en fin de saison, puis on bat Bohemians, 4-3. Et là, déplacement à Cork, pour le derby !!!! Grosse entame de match, puis victoire 3-2 avec le but vainqueur sur la fin !!! C’était magique !!!
Mon pire souvenir fut la relégation après les playoffs face à Finn Harps. On gagne le match aller 1-0 à domicile grâce à un but de Shaun Kelly, notre latéral droit. On se tape alors les 5 heures de trajet jusque dans le nord du Donegal, et là, défaite 1-0. Prolongations. C’était très serré, on prend le second but à la dernière minute des prolongations. Voilà, après tous les efforts consentis pour contredire les parieurs et ne pas finir derniers (le dernier du Championnat est directement relégué, l’avant-dernier joue les playoffs face au second de First Division, ndhc), on perd les playoffs à la dernière seconde, pas besoin de te dire que j’étais au fond du seau.
Justement, explique-moi ce qui s’est passé en 2015, j’ai du mal à comprendre : que des défaites sur les 20 premières journées, puis une spectaculaire remontée, avant ce cruel dénouement aux playoffs.
Comme je disais, 2015 fut dramatique. On a commencé par perdre tous nos matchs. Lors des 21 premières journées, notre meilleur résultat était un nul à domicile face à Dundalk, Champion en titre. Markets Field (stade actuel de Limerick FC, ndhc), était en rénovation, et on jouait alors dans un petit stade appelé Jackman Park sur la pire pelouse jamais vue au monde. L’affluence moyenne était de 600 personnes, ce qui est risible… Quant à l’équipe, pourrie. On avait de bons joueurs, mais pas très en forme…. La défense catastrophique …. Puis en juin, lors du mercato, on s’est renforcé avec notamment Freddy Hall (gardien international des îles Bermudes, ndhc), un très très bon gardien de but, Patrick Kanyuka et Shaun Kelly en défense. Alors lui, il aime Limerick FC, il y a joué longtemps avant de partir à Derry City. Sa femme venait de mettre au monde leur enfant, il a eu besoin de se rapprocher d’elle et il donc revenu à Limerick et a livré de grosses prestations. A partir de là, tout a changé, l’équipe s’est mise à bien jouer et a gagné son premier match en aout face à Sligo Rovers. La saison démarre en mars. Le temps jouait contre nous et Limerick s’est retrouvé à battre tout le monde et a quitté la dernière place du classement lors de la dernière journée !!!! On a donc joué les playoffs avec le résultat que tu sais et nous avons donc été relégués. Le point positif de 2015, c’est le rapprochement des supporters, l’affluence est remontée en retrouvant Markets Field, la passion pour Limerick est énorme !

Arrives-tu à suivre tous les matchs, que ce soit à domicile, en déplacement, à la TV ou radio ?
Je fais tous les matchs à domicile de la seconde phase, ainsi que tous les déplacements dans lesquels on a besoin de la victoire. Je fais tous les déplacements pour les matchs de Coupe aussi. Depuis qu’on est revenus à Markets Field pour la première fois depuis les eighties, je suis assez assidu, j’adore notre stade et l’atmosphère qui y règne.
Revenons à 2016, quel début de saison !!! Vous paraissez imbattables !!! (Limerick est premier de first division, invaincu, meilleure attaque et meilleure défense, ndhc)
Je sais ! Si nous nous étions maintenus en Premier Division, on jouerait pour une place européenne ! On détruit toutes les équipes les unes après les autres. En quelque sorte la relégation nous a fait du bien : les fans viennent de plus en plus nombreux, et l’argent récoltés grâce aux affluences nous a permis de nous renforcer avec des joueurs de Premier Division tels Aaron Greene et John O’Flynn. Nos meilleurs joueurs de 2015 sont restés, ce qui fait de nous l’équipe à battre.
Quelles sont tes attentes pour cette saison ?
Clairement c’est le titre et la promotion en Premier Division. Nous sommes bien partis. A l’heure où je t’écris nous sommes en quart de finale de la League Cup et un beau parcours en FAI Cup serait vraiment top, pas seulement d’arriver en finale à l’Aviva stadium, non, mais aller chercher la victoire et la qualification directe en Europa League qui en découle.
As-tu un joueur préféré à Limerick ? Dans le monde ?
Mon joueur préféré à Limerick est Shane Duggan, notre capitaine et star locale. Son père Ger est une légende ici, il a participé à des matchs de coupe d’Europe ! Duggan (Duggy) est un milieu de terrain complet, tout le jeu passe par lui. Il lui arrive aussi de marquer des buts décisifs, il a quitté Cork City pour revenir à Limerick et c’est ce qui le rend si populaire, on adore ça !!! Mon joueur préféré au monde est Shane Long (attaquant irlandais de Southampton, ndhc), j’ai assisté à la victoire de l’Irlande sur l’Allemagne en qualifications pour l’Euro 2016 et à son but décisif. J’adore Messi, il est simplement « amazing ».
Raconte-moi ton programme lors d’un jour de match
Lorsque le match débute à 18h30, on se retrouve avec les copains vers 14h, puis on joue au foot, on mange, et ensuite on part au stade avec mes deux frères. On se gare à Limerick, on marche jusqu’à Markets Field. On rejoint alors « The Blue Army » (les ultras de Limerick) et on chante pendant TOUT le match, on ne s’arrête pas. L’atmosphère est électrique ! Après le match, la tradition veut qu’on se retrouve autour du « chipper », puis on refait le match dans la voiture jusqu’à ce qu’on dépose mes amis.
Y-a-t-il un club que tu détestes dans la League of Ireland, un rival ?
Cork City !!! Bon je ne peux pas dire que je les hais, puisque je les supporterai, tout comme n’importe quel fan de League of Ireland, s’ils représentent l’Irlande en Europa League ou Champion’s League. Mais ils sont nos rivaux, lors d’un derby magnifique, appelé le « Munster Derby ». Limerick et Cork sont les deux clubs les plus supportés dans la province du Munster, les villes sont distantes d’à peine une heure de route, et les matchs sont toujours très engagés !
Pourquoi le foot n’est pas très populaire en Irlande ? Le foot gaélique, le hurling, le rugby sont plus suivi, je me trompe ?
Je ne suis pas trop d’accord avec toi. Un sondage national a démontré que le football est le sport le plus populaire en Irlande, juste devant le foot gaélique et le rugby. Le problème vient du fait qu’avant de venir voir un match de League of Ireland, les irlandais ont le préjugé que notre championnat est pourri. On est plus enclin à s’assoir dans le canapé et regarder la Premier League anglaise. J’ai amené des potes voir des matchs à Limerick, ils ont depuis mis leurs préjugés au placard et sont devenus des fans ! La passion en Irlande est surtout présente autour de l’équipe nationale, tu le verras en France cet été avec nos supporters, considérés comme les meilleurs lors des grosses compétitions. Pour conclure, le football est très présent en Irlande, c’est juste que majoritairement on suit le foot anglais.
As-tu une anecdote particulière à nous faire vivre par rapport à des déplacements ou matchs de Limerick FC ?
J’ai parlé avec des fans de Dundalk, Cork ou encore Shamrock Rovers de leurs déplacements à l’étranger et ça m’a vraiment l’air sympa ! C’est pour vivre ça que j’aimerais vraiment que l’on remporte la FAI Cup !! Sinon jusqu’à présent c’est notre victoire à Cork en 2015 qui me fascine. L’endroit le plus compliqué à jouer, on y gagne avec notre équipe de relégables. Je dois te dire qu’on l’a bien bien fêté. Peut-être que si on remporte une Coupe nationale j’aurais d’autres choses à raconter !
Comment tu sens l’équipe nationale d’Irlande à l’Euro 2016 ? Tu as un favori ?
Le tirage au sort nous met la Suède, l’Italie, et vos talentueux voisins, la Belgique. C’est un groupe super difficile ! Mais je crois en nous. La Suède nous est équivalente en talents, mais peut compter sur Zlatan pour faire la différence. Pour moi ce sera le match le plus important, on peut, et on doit gagner. L’Italie est connue pour être toujours présente lors des grandes compétitions, même si les italiens ne réalisent pas de grosses performances lors des qualifications. Je prévois un match nul contre eux. La Belgique est le favori, alors on se doit de les jouer comme quand on a battu l’Allemagne, en mode défense. Si à la fin on se retrouve avec 4 points, on continuera notre route. Je le répète, le match le plus important sera face à la Suède.
Je vois la France parmi les favoris (à la victoire finale). Votre équipe est fantastique. Des joueurs comme Dimitri Payet et Anthony Martial prouvent que vous avez des excellents joueurs partout. Paul Pogba et Matuidi ont une classe internationale, vous pouvez gagner l’Euro, et je ne dis pas ça parce que je te parle, mais parce que je le pense vraiment ! Votre équipe est impressionnante.
Une dernière chose, tu peux me dire un mot sur Max Blanchard, le seul frenchie de la League, défenseur des Shamrock Rovers ?
Max Blanchard. Il doit être reconnu comme l’un des meilleurs défenseurs (de la League of Ireland, ndhc) et quand il a débarqué aux Shamrock Rovers personne ne le connaissait ! Il était en Angleterre, jouait bien, et les Rovers ont eu le nez fin de le faire signer. C’est un leader en défense centrale et un super tacleur. Egalement très bon relanceur, il a une belle côte en Irlande.

First of all, can you introduce yourself to our readers ?
Hello everyone, my name is James Madigan and I am 15 years old. I live in a small town called Ennis located in the west of Ireland 30 kilometers north of Limerick. I've been following football since I was 8 years old when I watched the Euro 2008 final
How did you become a Limerick FC fan ?
10 March 2013 was a big day for me! I was just looking through the channels on the television one evening when a live football match was televised on the national TV station. This team called Limerick were playing their first game in the Premier Division (Ireland's top league) in 19 years against Cork City. It was played in Thomond Park in front of over 3,500 supporters. I, like many other Irish football fans, was supporting one of the big teams in the English Premier League. For me it was Liverpool. But the moment I saw a team just 20 minutes down the motorway playing live on television, I just said to myself 'I have to follow this team'. I have never turned back since.
What is your best moment as a Limerick FC fan ? Your worst ?
We have not won a major trophy since I've started supporting Limerick 3 years ago but there have certainly been special moments. But really it has to be beating Cork City at Turners Cross last season. Turners Cross is Cork's fortress you would be lucky to get a draw there. I was there that evening, we had won no games up until something like the 21st week of the league and it looked definite that we would go down. Then we beat Bohemians 4-3 for our second win on the bounce. Then on to Cork. Derby day! We started so well and got a winner in the second half to win 3-2. It was a great day.
The biggest low had to be then getting relegated in the promotion/relegation playoff against Finn Harps. We won the first leg at Markets Field (Limerick's stadium) 1-0, a cracking goal from right-back Shaun Kelly. Then a 5 hour drive up north to Donegal and we lost 1-0 after 90 minutes. Extra time. It was very tight. I was listening in on the radio when I heard we conceded a second a minute before the end of extra time. That was it, after all this hard work of beating the odds and not finishing last, we lose in the playoff in the last minute. Needless to say I was broken hearted.
Do you watch all the games ? Home and away ? In stadiums or on TV ?
I go to about every second home game with my friends and the odd away trip if it is a special atch that we need to win. I go to away cup matches too. Since we've moved back to Markets Field from the first time since the 1980s, I've been a regular visitor. I love the stadium and it's atmosphere.
What a great start !!! Limerick seems unbeattable !!!
I know ! If we were in the Premier Division we would definitely be aiming for Europe. We thrash teams week after week. In many ways relegation was a great thing becuase the fans came together and went to so many games. Our attendances soared. The money made from these matches eventually led us to buying special talent from the Premier Division like Aaron Greene and John O'Flynn. Also our top players from 2015 signed back so we overall have a top team able to beat anyone.
What do you wish for this season ?
The main aim this year is to win the First Division and get back promoted to the Premier where we belong. We are on the right track to do that now. At the time of writing we are in a League Cup Quarter Final and it would be lovely to get a run in the FAI Cup. Not only do the finalists of the FAI Cup get to play at the Aviva Stadium but also the winners get into the Europa League Qualification rounds.
Who is your favorite player in Limerick ? In the world ?
My favourite Limerick player is Shane Duggan. He is the captain and a local player. His father Ger, is a club legend leading us into European Cup matches. Duggan (or Duggy) is a very composed midfielder, and all the attacks go through him and his passes. He also scores a few great goals. He moved from our rivals Cork City and we love that! My favourite player in the world is Shane Long! I was there when Ireland beat Germany and his goal was top class. Lionel Messi has to be loved also, he is just amazing.
Can you tell us what do you do on a match day (where do you meet with friends, do you stay togheter after the game, …)
On matchday, we kick off at 6:30. My 3 classmates come at around 2, we play football outside, eat some food and we go to the match with my two brothers. We park in Limerick and walk to Markets Field. We sit with the Blue Army (Limerick's ultra group) and sing songs for the whole match! The atmosphere is electric! After the match we go across the road from the stadium to the chipper...this is a ritual. We then talk about the match on the car home and we drop my friends off.
Is there a club in LOI you hate ? And why ?
Cork City. I can't say I absolutely hate them as for example if they are playing in Europe I wish them the best as all LOI fans want a team in the Champions League or Europa League. But they are our rivals and it's a great derby. It is called the Munster Derby as both Limerick and Cork City are the two best and most supported teams in the province of Munster, the cities are about an hours drive away. Munster Derbies are normally cracking matches too
What happen in 2015, Limerick had a bad start, a great finish, before the playoffs. Why ?
As talked about before, 2015 was a mad season. We started horribly, losing every week. Our best result in the first 21 games was 1-1 home draw against Dundalk, the champions. Markets Field was being refurbished ao we played in this tiny stadium called Jackman Park with the worst pitch you would ever see. An average attendance there was maybe 600, which is laughable. As for the team, we were very poor. We had players with great reputations but they just weren't on good form. Our defense was terrible. In June, the mid season transfer window was on. We brought in Freddy Hall a top top goalkeeper (Bermuda interational goalkeeper) along with Patrick Kanyuka at the defense and also Shaun Kelly, a right back who loves Limerick F.C. who played with us in for a long time before departing for Derry City. He had to move closer to his home in Donegal as he was having a baby with his wife. He then came back and played great. Everything changed when we finally won our first match against Sligo Rovers in August, the season begun in March. Time was running out but we went into championship winning form and beat almost everyone to finally get off the bottom spot for the first time on the last game of the season. This meant we finished 11th so we had to play 2nd place in the First Division in a two legged playoff. As said before we lost 2-1 on aggregate on dramatic circumstances. But 2015 brought the clubs fans together and the attendances at Markets Field are consistantly large. The passion for Limerick is massive.
Do you have an idea why soccer is not very popular in Ireland ? Gaelic football, hurling or rugby are most popular, am I wrong ?
Ireland is a sports mad nation. But I will disagree with this statement. Public votes have shown football is the most followed sport in Ireland with the Gaelic games coming close behind and rugby third. The problem is that Irish football fans have a thought that LOI football is 'terrible' before they even see or go to a match. They are more inclined to sit at home and watch the Premier League than see what its really like to support a team you love. I have brought many friends to Limerick matches who may have thought before it was a poor standard of football to be amazed by the passion and top quality football that is right on their doorstep. These friends now go to matches with me and are now real Limerick fans along with supporting their Premier League clubs. But the passion for Irish football is very big when you see the national team play. You will see in France this summer the great Irish support that has now become world famous at these major tournaments. So football is big in Ireland, it is just that most fans support English football.
Do you have a weird story to tell us about travels or games with Limerick FC ?
I speak to fans of Dundalk, Cork and Shamrock Rovers about their European away trips and it sounds like great fun. That is why I really want Limerick to win the FAI Cup this year as we will then be in Europe. But presently the weirdest game has to be the 3-2 win at Cork. It is the hardest place to win in Ireland, and with our relegation team we won. I must say it was a great day and we celebrated like mad. Maybe when we reach a cup final sometime I might have more stories to tell!
How do you feel the national team for the Euro 2016 ? Death group !
Republic of Ireland have been paired with Sweden, Italy and your very talented neighbours Belgium. This is a very hard group! But I believe Ireland are up there with them in quality. Sweden's quality is very similar to ours, although they do have Zlatan and he may be the difference. For me, I feel the Sweden game is the most important. We must win this, and we definitely can beat them. Italy are well known for great tournamnet performances although they didn't have a good qualification campagin. I predict a draw for this game. Belgium are a top team and we may have to play the defensive game for this one like against Germany. They might just be to good for us. But if we could get 4 points, we would at least go through via the 3rd place spot if not 2nd place. Sweden is the one we need to win.
As for France, I believe you are firm favourites. Your team is brilliant. Bringing in players like Dimitri Payet and Anthony Martial is showing there is French talent everywhere. Also players like Paul Pogba and Blaise Matuidi have shown themselves to be world class players. I think you can definitely win this tournament and I'm not just saying that because I'm talking to a French website! Your team is very impressive.
Can you tell me a word about Max Blanchard, the french player in Shamrock Rovers ?
On Max Blanchard. He must be seen as one of the leagues best defenders and it was a great signing by Rovers as no one else in Ireland knew of him. He was in England at the time and playing well so Rovers did great to pick him up. He brings a commanding presence at center back and is a great tackler. He is happy on the ball too and can lay a pass brilliantly. He is highly rated in Ireland.
